The Myth of Bringing Your Full Authentic Self to Work

A Conversation with Pultizer Prize Finalist, Luis Alberto Urrea | Seattle Arts & Lectures

Jodi-Ann Burey was very good!
She was knowledgeable and asked thoughtful questions, and she really seemed to be enjoying herself, too. It was obvious that Burey put time and effort into her Q & A role. Tonight’s lecture was one of the most memorable from start to finish! The time went by too quickly. It was just plain fun.

welcome to the lit lounge

No one narrative can tell the story of who we all are. From our triumphs to the mundanity of everyday living, from how we laugh to how we hurt, from how we struggle with dreams deferred to ways we can embody our dreams completely — there may not be enough books to read in the world that captures who we are, but we can try.

I curated the Lit Lounge to spark continued exploration about these topics with a rotating list of titles authored by people of color who are devoted to telling the stories of our lives - lived or imagined.

The Lit Lounge is hosted and sponsored by oneKIN, a mission-driven retail-tech company that provides small business creative technology solutions.

teaching

  • COMMLD 560: Communication Strategies for Inclusive Leadership (grad, 5 credits) | Communication Leadership, University of Washington — Winter 2021

Course description: We are in the midst of a national reckoning with the presence and impact of institutionalized anti-Black racism in our lives. Politicians, business leaders and everyday people all across the country are asking what it means to stand for Black lives. To do so requires committing beyond surface level diversity and inclusion practices and digging deeper into how we make meaning with our choices for the images and narratives we use to create culture. Knowing how we engage in meaning-making as communicators is foundational to reimagining what meaning we can make to push our companies and cultures towards the vision of racial equity. In this course, we will examine case studies of meaning making across professional sectors including studies of entertainment, fashion, and politics. We will connect this to our interpersonal interactions across race in our professional lives, as well as in our work as communication leaders. By the end of the course, students will be able to more effectively articulate cultural messages and develop skills to help them create new narratives grounded in inclusion, belonging and racial equity.

Be an Inclusive Organization People Won’t Leave

In this course, Jodi-Ann Burey explains best practices can help your company leverage inclusion practices to get at the business of truly caring for employees, provide an equitable workplace for all, and retain your valuable workforce. She shows you ways to think more systematically about why people quit, not just any organization, but your organization specifically. As Jodi-Ann explains, a revolving door of talent is costly, not just in time and money, but in credibility, as it makes it difficult to maintain commitments to retain a diverse workforce.

How Organizations Can End Imposter Syndrome

In this course, Jodi-Ann Burey explores the role that workplace cultures play in perpetuating imposter syndrome, as well as how to implement sustainable solutions that allow all employees to thrive.
